That's insulting.
All my mixed tapes were made from FM recordings from Casey Kasem's American Top 40.

Yes!! With the annoying DJ cut-in at the end of the song! That was devotion to music. Sittin' by the radio hand on the dial. Soon as you hear it, pump up the volume. I did that.

And if you were really good you did a manual turn backwards on the tape between songs to make the transitions between songs that much more abrupt.

Seriously though, I never really did any mix tape making and once I started really collecting music, I became aware of the whole "ripping off" the artist thing. I taped (recorded) a lot of shows and copied the recordings for a bunch of folks, but I always bought the official/commercial releases and encouraged others to do so. Never copied a commercial release for myself. If I heard a good album at someone's house, I went out and bought it. May have gotten some filler on the end of a tape from a commercial release, but always eventually bought the record/CD. In fact, I have tried to always give away at least one copy of each show I taped as a kind of payback for the privilege of being able to make the tape in the first place.
Sorry. I just get bent out of shape by the folks who always want it for free, like they're getting over on someone by copying (or downloading as it is today) rather than buying. If it's for sale, then buy it. Simple.
